When is the last time your septic tank was pumped? Regular pump-outs are how you avoid clogs, foul odors, and the repairs that follow them. For a healthy system, most tanks should be pumped about every two years; a vacation rental with heavy use is better served yearly.
Pumping on a sensible schedule gets solids out of the tank before they carry over into the leach field, and the leach field is the most expensive part of the system to fix.
How often should a tank be pumped?
Every two years is the common answer, but the honest answer depends on the household. A bigger family fills a tank faster than a couple does. A house used every day keeps a healthier tank than one used only on the weekend. Certain medical situations call for yearly pumping.
